Abismo Anhumas
Duration3 hrs
Abismo Anhumas has two operations at the same site, but they are not versions of one another. The snorkeling experience serves tourists from 8 years old, with no certification required — just arrive and descend. This tour is scuba diving, exclusively for those with a valid diving license (minimum Open Water Diver), and there are only four spots per day.
⚠️ We always advise: without valid certification, there is no point insisting — the 72-meter descent is the same, but below it is a technical operation with a dive master and two dives of up to 18 meters.

The cave is 23 km from downtown Bonito, within the groundwater table. The 72-meter descent — taller than a 20-story building — takes about 5 minutes and is done through an assisted lifting system. The diver remains suspended in the equipment, without physical effort.
At the bottom, the lake stays at 24°C year-round and visibility exceeds 30 meters under normal conditions. The limestone formations extend for dozens of meters underwater, with deposition cones that exist in only a few flooded caves in Brazil.
Because it is within the groundwater table, the attraction prohibits sunscreen, repellents and any cream. The operation is monitored by qualified vertical-technique specialists and certified dive masters, and Porto Seguro insurance is mandatory for all participants.
This control is necessary to maintain safety in an enclosed space and preserve the environment. With four people, every movement is coordinated and air consumption does not compromise the diving window of the others.

The tour begins the day before, with the mandatory checkpoint.
Between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on the day before, the diver goes to the attraction office to sign the insurance, try on the wetsuit and receive the final instructions. At that moment, the descent time is confirmed — it depends on the day’s logistics, which consider snorkeling, dives and the total number of visitors.
The descent is always done in pairs, for safety. During the 72-meter vertical shaft, photography is not allowed. We have accompanied divers who describe this forced silence — no screen, no flash — as one of the few moments of full attention that a tourist experience imposes.
At the base, the dive master leads the group through the dive of up to 18 meters deep. The route passes through limestone formations, submerged cones and water with visibility of more than 30 meters.
The water is around 24°C, and the wetsuit included in the tour keeps body temperature stable during the dives.
After the dive, the group ascends using the same lifting system and has access to the changing room and rest area. The full operation takes about 3 hours from arrival to release.

This tour is for certified divers who already master the basic technique and want to move beyond open-sea dives or natural pools. The cave requires extra attention to buoyancy and air consumption — the space is enclosed, and the rock ceiling is always above.
Those who have already dived in confined environments, wrecks or at night tend to adapt quickly. Those who have never left open water need to be prepared for the sensation of a nearby ceiling and the absence of natural light in the deeper areas.
Those looking for underwater photography will find filtered light through the cave entrance and more than 30 meters of visibility — conditions that make it easier to capture sharp photos without motion compensation.
The dive is not an extension of the snorkeling experience. They are separate operations, with different teams and distinct requirements. Having a snorkeling reservation and trying to convert it into a dive on the day will not work — spots are filled in advance and require proven certification.
The Open Water certificate (or equivalent) must be up to date and presented during training
The maximum weight is 150 kg, including equipment
The minimum age is 12 years
Photography is not allowed during the descent or ascent of the vertical shaft

Yes. The minimum is the Open Water Diver course or an internationally recognized equivalent. The license must be valid and presented during training on the previous day.
The snorkeling experience is open to tourists from 8 years old, with no certification required, and includes surface snorkeling with a snorkel. Scuba diving is exclusive to certified divers, allows descents of up to 18 meters and is limited to four participants per day.
The ban on photos in the 72-meter vertical shaft is a safety and logistics rule of the attraction. Without a camera in hand, the diver is 100% focused on the equipment.
No. Transportation from Bonito to the attraction is hired separately. Bonitour offers shared transfer, private transfer and taxi — talk to a consultant to include it in your itinerary.
No. The descent is done through an assisted lifting system, where the diver remains suspended in technical equipment and does not need to use physical effort. Active rappelling, with manual rope control, is not used in this operation.
One day before the activity, it is mandatory to complete the checkpoint, which consists of going to the attraction office to sign the Porto Seguro insurance, try on the wetsuit, receive some final instructions and align the schedule. The checkpoint is essential to carry out the activity!
Note: The tour start time will be defined at the checkpoint, which takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the day before the tour. We do not guarantee or sell times in advance.
The rappel descent at Abismo Anhumas is performed in pairs, according to the attraction’s technical and operational procedures. This format is adopted based on safety, logistics and activity-control criteria defined by the technical team responsible for the operation.
The descent dynamics and its rules are previously informed by the attraction and reinforced during the mandatory briefing before the start of the tour. This is a standard procedure and cannot be changed by the intermediary agency.
⚠️ Attention: for this activity, you must be a certified diver (minimum Open Water)!
You must bring a light snack, such as a sandwich, cereal bars, chocolate and water. The tour does not offer food and there are no nearby places to buy something to eat.
On the tour, you must wear a Hering-style T-shirt, long pants that are not jeans or long shorts, hiking boots or sneakers with long socks to protect your shins, and swimwear under the clothes you are wearing. Also bring a towel and a jacket for after the water.
The tour does NOT offer transportation, and Abismo Anhumas is located 24 km from the city, near Gruta do Lago Azul.
We suggest that you do not drink alcoholic beverages on the night before the tour.
Abismo Anhumas has Porto Seguro personal accident insurance.
The operation is safe and meets the requirements of NBR/ISO 21101 — Safety Management System - Requirements, and is carried out by qualified vertical-technique monitors.
The company has a Safety Policy that includes continuous improvement, mitigation of environmental and social impacts and compliance with applicable legislation (posted on the notice board at the central office, and you can check it at the checkpoint on the previous day).
Cancellation or failure to appear on the stipulated date and time of the tour may result in a full “no show” charge. For more information, see the rules here. https://abismoanhumas.com.br/alteracoes-e-politicas/
You may bring a camera, but NO ONE may take photos in the vertical shaft, either on the descent or on the ascent.
We have chemical toilets inside and outside the cave. If necessary, ask one of our monitors for help.
Please do not use sunscreen, repellents or any cream before going to Abismo. Help us preserve the cave, as the water activities take place in the groundwater table.
