Gruta do Lago Azul
Duration1 hr, 30 mins
The Blue Lake Cave is Bonito/MS's main postcard attraction, as well as one of the largest flooded cavities on the planet. What appears to be a simple underground lake is actually a limestone rock system that took millions of years to form — and the lake occupies the deepest point of a cave with more than 150 meters of height between the entrance and the water surface.
The visit is contemplative: we accompany the descent of 300 steps carved into the rock, the guided route and the approximately 10 minutes on the observation deck. It is not an adventure activity — it is a geological testimony.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────
The route begins with a 200-meter trail on a path carved into the rock to the cave entrance. From there, the 300-step staircase descends 150 meters in height — equivalent to a 50-story building — down to the lake level. During the descent, the guide makes stops for rest and photos, and the pace is the visitor's.
Along the walls, speleothems of different shapes and sizes record thousands of years of mineral formation. The cave is home to stalactites and stalagmites that cannot be touched — contact with hands interrupts the formation process and damages structures that took millennia to grow. These formations are protected by conservation rules that apply to all visitors.
During exploratory dives carried out in the cave, researchers found fossils of extinct megafauna animals: Giant Ground Sloth, Saber-toothed Tiger and Mastodons.
These remains were preserved at the bottom of the lake for thousands of years, turning the cavity into a true underground natural history museum. The discovery reinforces the geological importance of the attraction, which goes far beyond the color of the lake.

The visit follows a linear route with well-defined stages, all accompanied by a certified guide.
The path to the cave entrance is a 200-meter trail on flooring carved into the rock, not on dirt. The terrain is flat and the walk takes only a few minutes. The route is the same on the return, so you already know the path when you go down.
The staircase is steep and has a handrail along the entire route. The guide accompanies the group and makes scheduled stops for rest. Wearing sneakers and a face mask is mandatory throughout the route — it is not possible to enter wearing flip-flops, sandals or without facial protection.
Upon reaching the bottom, the group remains approximately 10 minutes on the observation deck over the lake. It is enough time to take photos and absorb the turquoise-blue color of the water. The stay is controlled to maintain the flow of visitors — it is not possible to extend the time on the deck.
The climb requires more stamina than the descent. The same route of 300 steps in the opposite direction tests endurance, especially on warmer days. Anyone with breathing difficulties or reduced mobility should assess in advance whether the return is feasible. The pace is free and stops are allowed.
