Lagoa Misteriosa is a flooded cave of phreatic origin — formed by the flow of water from the underground water table over thousands of years — reaching more than 220 meters of recorded depth, with the real bottom still unknown.
Eight meters below the surface, two wells open up, each about 10 meters in diameter, descending vertically for more than 240 meters. Those who snorkel here are not drifting down a river with a current: the water is still, visibility is vertical, and what you see are the cave walls narrowing into the darkness. It is the most contemplative snorkeling experience in Bonito’s catalog.

From six meters deep, the lagoon is already classified as a cave. The name “Misteriosa” is not a marketing device — it comes from the practical impossibility of measuring its total depth.
Divers from technical expeditions have tried to reach the bottom on several occasions, and the recorded mark remains at 220 meters. The two wells that open up at eight meters deep descend vertically for more than 240 meters, forming one of Brazil’s largest flooded cavities.
The still water of the cave works like a window into the underground. Unlike Bonito’s rivers, where the current carries visitors and aquatic fauna is abundant, here the spectacle is geological. The rock walls narrow as the depth increases, and the light that penetrates the surface reveals tones that change according to the angle of the sun.

The experience begins at the visitor center and follows three stages until the return.
The route starts with a 15-minute walk through the forest to the viewpoint. The trail is flat and allows visitors to observe the cerrado vegetation before seeing the lagoon for the first time. From the viewpoint, the panoramic view shows the extent of the doline and the color of the water — the moment when most visitors understand why the place carries this name.
From the viewpoint, a structured staircase leads to the water entry point. The descent is safe, with a handrail and non-slip flooring. Closed shoes fastened around the ankle are mandatory — sneakers, hiking sandals, or boots — both on the trail and on the staircase. At the entry point, the team provides a life jacket, mask, and snorkel.
The snorkeling takes place in still water. Visitors move using their arms or by being towed by the guide. There is no current, and the depth where visitors snorkel is shallow — the deep wells are below, visible but inaccessible. The sensation described by those who have already taken the tour is that of being suspended over the void, with the safety of the life jacket and constant support from the team.
⚠️ Between mid-September and mid-April, snorkeling is suspended due to the proliferation of microalgae. Those planning to travel during this window need to check availability in advance. Bonitour can recommend alternative snorkeling tours that operate normally during this period.
At the end of the snorkeling, the group returns by the same staircase. The site has a changing room, shower, and lockers for changing clothes. The on-site restaurant offers a lunch option.

Lagoa Misteriosa is suited to those looking for an experience that is more reflective than dynamic. There are no colorful shoals or currents carrying the body — what exists is the impressive scale of a flooded cave that no one has yet fully mapped.
We accompany groups with very different profiles on this tour, and those who arrive expecting river snorkeling are often surprised: here the pace is different, and the fascination comes from geology, not fauna.
For children under 5 years old, we do not recommend it — the descent by staircase and the need to cooperate during the snorkeling require a level of maturity that younger children do not yet have.
Those who are afraid of the dark or uncomfortable with depth may feel uneasy when looking down and seeing the cave wall disappearing into the darkness — this is the point worth evaluating before booking. For those seeking adrenaline or excitement, there are snorkeling options with stronger currents in Bonito’s catalog.
Snorkeling operates only between mid-April and mid-September — outside this window, the activity is suspended
Sunscreen and repellent are prohibited during snorkeling — apply them before the trail and let them dry
No previous snorkeling experience is required — the use of the life jacket and the guide’s support ensure safety

The minimum age is 5 years old. For younger children, we recommend consulting our specialists so they can suggest an alternative suited to the family’s profile.
It is not mandatory — the life jacket is provided and the team accompanies the group throughout the entire snorkeling activity. It is worth mentioning your comfort level with water to the consultant at the time of booking.
Snorkeling is suspended during this period due to the proliferation of microalgae. Bonitour can suggest alternative snorkeling tours that operate during this window — consult a specialist.
